It was written at a time when few portraits of Asian American life were available, and no similar works were as popular and broadly appealing. The US State Department even sent its charismatic young author on a four-month speaking tour throughout Asia.Ĭited as an influence by prominent Chinese American writers such as Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston, Fifth Chinese Daughter is a foundational work in Asian American literature. Originally published in 1950, Fifth Chinese Daughter was one of the most widely read works by an Asian American author in the twentieth century. Jade Snow Wong’s autobiography portrays her coming-of-age in San Francisco's Chinatown, offering a rich depiction of her immigrant family and her strict upbringing, as well as her rebellion against family and societal expectations for a Chinese woman. He therefore continually thinks of their relationship in terms of marriage, takes great pleasure in their domesticity, and displays an intense physical shyness, avoiding even touching Mattie when they are alone together in the house.Įthan's sense of duty and morality conflict with his desires in a variety of other ways. Similarly, Ethan avoids entering into an affair with Mattie because he knows that an affair would ruin Mattie's reputation. Yet, because Ethan knows that society would severely judge a man who abandoned his wife, and because he knows that without him Zeena would suffer in poverty, he can't bring himself to leave her. Ethan's desire to leave Zeena for Mattie is therefore completely understandable. Wharton portrays Zeena as horribly shrewish, devoid of any redeeming attributes, while Mattie is kind, gentle, radiant, and a perfect match for Ethan. Most prominently, this theme plays out in Ethan's struggle between his desire for Mattie and his sense of duty toward Zeena, his wife. Ethan struggles against the customs and rules of society, fighting an inner battle between what he feels he needs in order to be happy and what he feels he must do to appease his family and society. The more he listens, the more Justyce believes that Quan’s case is not being taken seriously. He senses issues and injustices in Quan’s arrest and processing. Turns out, the writing is therapeutic for Quan and intriguing to Justyce. The letters revealed issues that Quan hadn’t known his friend struggled with. Plus, Justyce had given Quan his notebook filled with the letters he wrote to the late Dr. They’re too tight for Quan to feel (much) bitterness. And that's probably part of the reason I've never picked it up before. So why don't I feel more than "meh" about this cover? I don't know, but it's never jumped out at me, despite having been on my radar for quite some time. It's certainly different from what else is out there, and the blood is effective without going over-the-top. I like the idea behind it a lot, and while I usually do like simplicity in a book cover, this one just isn't very striking. Having read the book, I can understand how relevant the cover is.
